Artist Statement
“My grandfather crossed the Atlantic at fourteen, fleeing from famine and war. He never returned. Not for a lack of means, but because he saw no reason to. His was a one-way trip. Once he set foot in Argentina, he erased his memories and started over. Only his accent continued to reveal a corner of Italy. And as a monarchist he never renounced his nationality. On arrival at the port of Buenos Aires, he found that his steamer trunk had been stolen. It was the brutal beginning of his life as an immigrant.
Soul migration. To cut all ties and hurl oneself into the void, like a stone. His heirs are genetically programmed for the return trip, the Atlantic always beckoning in their daydreams. Do body and soul migrate at the same time? The body takes longer. It gets caught up in some landscape, or stuck in a timeless mirror.
Someone somewhere will be waiting. Someone might arrive. Someone will depart. And the day after will be endless. My children and the children of others fly off to finish a story, to see other Sundays and dream in another tongue. The cycle never stops.”
Antonia Guzman was born and resides in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her rich, sensuous pallet draws the viewer to enter her personal world, where through geometric and figurative compositions, she expresses her explorations on both personal and global issues. Her exhibitions always have a theme, which over the past several years have focused on home and family and immigration and isolation.
While serious in subject, Guzman is able to distil the essence of her themes into a warm, colorful canvas where a story unfolds. Her work is highly linear, yet her geometric lines are softly hued and symbolic figures are minimized. Human figures are depicted as whimsical stick figures with triangular heads; small boats represent loved ones leaving home; and lighthouses symbolize the way home.
