Studies in balance
The concept of gravity has always captivated my imagination and my
sculptures are an attempt to push the center of gravity to a visual
extreme. They seem to defy the laws of gravity. Each sculpture is
absolutely balanced and will stand without the aid of the mounting
disk or base. The pieces range in scale from table top sizes to outdoor
monuments.
The Process
Each sculpture starts out as a hand drawn sketch and is then converted
into a foam core study model built to a 1:1 scale. Adjustments are
made to achieve balance. The foam core model is then used as a template
pattern to cut out the sheet metal and the final sculpture is welded
together. The sculptures are either painted or left in their natural
state and may be acid etched to enhance the oxidation process.
Background
Jim Scott graduated from Southern Oregon State with a degree in art
and a minor in physics. Jim took a second degree in industrial design
at the famed Art Center College of Design in Pasadena California.
In addition to sculpture Jim is a talented wood worker and furniture
designer. Most recently Jim has shown with the Tucson Pima Arts Council
and an outdoor exhibition at Ventana Medical Systems.
